Finally some real competition in the skies!!

Wellington is the big winner from Pacific Blue's announcement that it will start flying between the main centres from November 15. The budget airline, owned by Virgin Blue of Australia, will restore competition between Wellington and Christchurch, a route abandoned by Qantas in March, and increase trans-Tasman services from the capital. Virgin Blue chief executive Brett Godfrey said in Wellington yesterday the additional Tasman services were possible because of Pacific Blue increasing its fleet of 180-seat Boeing 737-800 by three, to seven. All would fly domestic and Tasman services. "What we are looking at doing out of Wellington is something a couple of times a week, and a couple of times a week into another (New Zealand) market." An announcement on destinations would be made about November. Pacific Blue axed its service from Wellington to Sydney, which ran five times a week, in 2005 in favour of more lucrative routes out of Auckland. It still flies three times a week to Brisbane. The airline's long-awaited domestic arrival was welcomed by the tourism and travel sector. Positively Wellington Tourism chief executive Tim Cossar said competition stimulated a market and it was "highly likely we will see inreased domestic travel to Wellington". The airline took the domestic market by storm yesterday, with travellers scooping up more than 30,000 seats at a $39 launch fare. It is understood 70,000 of the fares are available. Pacific Blue's lowest standard fares, starting at $59 between Wellington and Christchurch, undercut Air New Zealand by $20, forcing the national carrier to match them to protect its market share. But whereas Pacific Blue's initial schedule is for a total of 10 return flights a day between the three cities, Air New Zealand operates 56 daily flights on the same routes. Pacific Blue would not try to match Air New Zealand's network or flight frequency, Mr Godfrey said, but would expand the market by lowering the cost of travel. Virgin Blue Group had A$700 million (NZ$800 million) in the bank, which would allow it to fly 139 days without income. House of Travel retail director Brent Thomas said the plans were aggressive and showed Pacific Blue was serious about competing long term. Air New Zealand's group general manager of short-haul airlines, Norm Thompson, said the national carrier would defend its position in New Zealand, where it had grown the domestic market by 40 per cent since introducing a lower fare model in 2002. Air New Zealand will announce changes to its services on Tuesday.

I'm back...it seems like ages....

It has been a long time since I last wrote something on this site...so I thought it was high time that I did something about it.
While I was " away", I visited my family in Auckland for a few days and had a memorial function for my Nana who passed in January this year.We decided to celebrate what would've been Nana's 67th birthday with her friends as well as remembering what a great person she was.We miss you lots Nan..
While I was in Auckland, Wellington was having a great time without me.Sir Ian McKellan made a grand appearance at the St James Theatre in the Royal Shakesphere Society's King Lear and also in The Seagull
Wellington also had Proud 07, the annual pride week celebration which included the " High School Prom" at the James Cook Grand Chancellor Hotel and The Pajama Party hosted by the Glamazons at Imerst. The Pajama Party closed this year's Proud 07 and I hear from some reliable sources that it was a blast and that I missed out on an amazing party.Bring on next year I say!!!

Some of my favourite music videos for you all to enjoy.

Steps - Stomp: Love this video because it's so gay.But it's also kinda catchy. The Glamazons Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera - Nobody Wants To Be Lonely

Review: Pink - Live at Auckland's Vector Arena

Pink Where: Vector Arena, Auckland When: Sunday, June 10 She may be among pop music's biggest talents, but it seems Pink really wants to be a rock star. There were enough guitar solos, hairy axe men and tight leather pants at Pink's climactic Auckland show to rival a Metallica concert. And that was before the Harley Davidson arrived on stage. Pink began her show like a true metalhead, dressed head to toe in black leather and rocking out with guitar-fuelled versions of Trouble and Like A Pill, played to a crowd warmed up with classic AC/DC, Rolling Stones and Guns N' Roses tracks. What a way to start. Luckily, that wasn't the only trick in Pink's impressive book. She spent the rest of the show proving why she's one of the world's biggest pop stars, pleasing a near sell-out crowd with a 90-minute set full of impressive theatrics, quick-fire costume changes, self-deprecating humour and upbeat pop songs. And there wasn't a sign of end-of-tour fatigue, something many may have been worried about after Pink delayed this show to fit in three extra dates during her exhausting - and record-breaking - Australian tour. She certainly couldn't have been tired to perform the thrilling high-rise theatrics scattered throughout the set. During the song Fingers, Pink stripped down to a fluorescent bikini and worked her way through a series of raunchy manoeuvres in a net soaring above the stage, no doubt pleasing the men scattered among the mostly teenage audience. There were plenty more theatrics, with flamenco dancing and a hilarious version of recent hit single Stupid Girls complete with ditzy mock-celebrities stumbling along the catwalk in front of the stage. That song sounds even more prophetic now that Paris Hilton is behind bars. And when the poptastic thrills ground to a halt with a sit-down acoustic campfire sing-along - including the politically-charged Dear Mr President and several covers - Pink managed to make it entertaining with some great singing and well-timed jokes. Those covers - Bob Marley's Redemption Songs, Janis Joplin's Me and Bobby McGhee and 4 Non Blonde's What's Going On - showcased both Pink's taste in music and her impressive vocal range. If anyone ever doubted Pink - don't. People, this girl can sing. And she couldn't resist donning those leathers one more time for U + Ur Hand, getting in touch with her inner bogan by performing while draped over a giant Harley Davidson. She ended - ironically - with Let's Get the Party Started, complete with confetti drop and more high-rise theatrics. Whew. Pink, you've earned a break. Fellow pop chart-toppers Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera are due to perform on the same stage in the next couple of months. They should probably be taking notes from Pink, because they're going to have to be really impressive to top this performance.

My Favourite Clips from OutTakes 2007

Another Gay Movie is a parody of every teen movie that has screened over the past 10 years. It is about 4 guys who will do anything possible to lose their anal virginity on their prom night. It's hilarious and totally funny in the same kinda vein as American Pie.Watch this clip for a sneak peak.It features Graeme Norton in a very hilarious role!! The straight world gets Die Hard 4 and MI3. We get Eating Out 2. We win. The first gay movie sequel ever, if you enjoyed one, take two before bedtime. A sex comedy for everyone, Eating Out 2 asks some serious questions about closet politics, the Christian Right’s ex-Gay Movement and sexual identity, but then forgets to really answer them – it’s so dizzy and anyway, it’s having too much fun. In the first film, student Kyle convinced his straight roommate to pretend to be gay to get the girl. Now Kyle pretends to be heterosexual to land Troy, the new guy – and nude model – in town, only to find himself joining the campus ex-gay support group and nabbing a girlfriend! Kyle’s ex-boyfriend, Marc, is horrified at the plan and decides to pursue the confused Troy with his own tactic – being his out gay self. Who will win? It’s so good natured that you know everyone gets the boy and no one loses. Lie back and enjoy.

I had a great night out with some of my work collegues from Reading Cinemas and also some of my non work friends too.I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Ian, Alyssa, Jen, Nathanial and Christina for representing the slackers of Reading Cinemas and heklping to make this the best birthday I've had since I moved to Wellington.I would also like to say Thank You to Logan, David, Joe, Aaron and Miss Ellie Kat for making it a blast too.Bring on the next party!!!! Drag personality ‘Ellie Kat’ triumphed over seven other glamorous contestants to be crowned the capital’s ‘Queen of all Queens’ – Miss Drag Wellington – last night at Imerst nightclub. Kat tells GayNZ.com she’s “very excited and pleased” to have won the title. Over 400 people were at the show. For her ‘talent’ section she chose to perform to the Gnarls Barkley hit ‘Crazy’. Brendan Goudswaard, 22, has been performing as Ellie Kat since his talent quest at Wellington High School. He says he even appeared in drag for his school class photo and ID card. “Ellie Kat said all the right things – support our community, help the NZ AIDS Foundation, prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS,” an attendee reported back. In second place was Sasha Frieze, and third was Nalia Star, performing a live number in an outfit resembling Bette Midler. All the other entrants lip synched. Miss Ribena and the team from Auckland’s Family nightclub were there at the show, and have now decided to fly Goudswaard to Auckland for a special K’ Road performance next month. Congratulations Ellie. You're a star and a total darling.

Only 3 days until i get another year older....

It is now only 3 days to go until I turn 28 and I know I have nothing to worry about by getting older.Or do I?lol Anyway....I had an assessment interview with Air New Zealand today at Wellington Airport.I was a little nervous about it, since it's the first job I've applied for since I started at Reading Cinemas two years ago.But I neednt have been nervous as they made it as stressful and informative as they could. The position I applied for was as a Customer Services Agent which involves helping passengers with their Check-In and baggage. It also involves meeting and greeting passengers from in-bound flights in to Wellington and also helping them board their flight. I will hopefully find out before Tuesday if I am successful in my application and once I know....I will let you all know on here. Anyway....take care and see you all soon. xx

Dougie's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Review

Expectations can be everything. Nobody thought much of Jerry Bruckheimer’s plan to turn a creaky Disneyland ride into a feature film – not least the studio suits, who panicked at the sight of a camp Johnny Depp mincing his way through the early rushes – so when Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl surfaced as one of the box-office juggernauts of 2003, it took everyone by surprise. Disney’s response to the movie’s success was to torpedo the audience with more in last year’s first of two sequels, Dead Man’s Chest – more characters, more plots, more running time, resulting in even more monstrous theatrical grosses – only, and we know we’re walking the plank in suggesting it, much less in the way of fun. Dead Man’s Chest was festooned with impressive set pieces but it missed the lighter comic touch, instead tangling itself up in convoluted plot rigging and greedily leaving its audience, with wallets agape, on a routine cliffhanger. And so we arrive At World’s End only half-drunk on cheap rum and with a jaded eye on the horizon. Will it recapture the verve of the original and bring the story to a rousing finale? The good news is that the answer is “aye”. Despite the off-the-map running time (168 minutes) it’s got more drive and character smarts than it’s predecessor, clearly benefitting from the compulsion to wrap up the story. The bad news is that the improvements aren’t enough to put it in the league of the first film – it’s cut from the same rag as part two, and the sense of overload that plagued Dead Man’s Chest applies. Black Pearl was refreshing because it had its tongue firmly planted in its ruddy cheek – a swashbuckling comedy-adventure showcasing the unlikeliest left-of-field leading man turn in a summer blockbuster. Burdened with the weight of a box-office that suggested it all turn epic, both Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End have gotten bigger and more ponderous, sidelining the flightier comic moments in favour of effects spectacles and labyrinthine plots that require whole half hours and scores of characters devoted to their exposition. At World’s End sets sail as an entertaining rescue mission, as our heroes – led by the never-feistier Knightley – hook up with Chow Yun-Fat’s Oriental-for-hire Sao Feng, escape a deadly attack from those stuffy British villains, and make off into the land of the dead. There we find Jack Sparrow comically adrift in both Jones’ purgatory and his own cracked mind – a surreal, Gilliam-esque detour with multiple Depps acting out Being Jack Sparrow – and the crew reunites in a quest to bring the nine pirate heads together for a showdown with their rivals. The return of Rush’s Barbossa – and his film-stealing monkey – is a huge boost to the ensemble, his theatrical flourishes bringing the comic relish back and again playing wonderfully off Depp. Then the fits of unwieldy exposition begin, with double crosses and treacheries you’ll need ye olde parchment to keep track of – as Orlando Bloom confessed to US mag EW recently: “Someone asked me, ‘So tell us about your character’s arc in the third movie.’ I said, ‘Dude, the writers can’t even explain the third movie.’’’And that’s what keeps At World’s End from returning to the pure, giddy ride of the first instalment. The movie strains under its many plots, while arguably failing to come up with a set piece as inspired as Dead Man’s Chest’s wheel-of-death. Again this marginalises Depp to make way for other players, some of whom, like Sao Feng, are great, while others, like Tia Dalma’s mythical metamorphasis into sea-goddess Calypso, fall short of their potential. Not that any of that should bother most fans. To find fault in this review-proof behemoth is redundant; it'll have broken countless box-office records before this paragraph is even over. And in the end, At World’s End is overflowing with enough pleasures to keep everyone amused, with the protracted action climax, in particular, finally making us care for the characters again – though whether we can endure another three films, as the ending all but threatens, is another matter entirely. Director Verbinski even stages what passes for popcorn political comment, as his recognisably multi-ethnic pirate heroes gallantly defy their white corporate oppressors. If only more moviegoers were capable of mounting similar resistance. Verdict:Better than part two and occasionally rising to the spirit of the original, it’s an entertaining spectacle that brings the story to satisfying conclusion – but it’s still too long and overloaded, at the expense of the comedy.

High School Musical....Soarin...Flyin...There's not a star....

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL was Disney's break-out smash hit last year...and now it has been brought to the stage in spectacular fashion by Wellington Musical Theatre.I had the privilage of seeing the first show on Friday 18th May 2007 and loved every single moment of it.
This is a feel good, fun-for-all musical in the best traditions of Grease. It will remind anyone who ever took part in a school musical what an absolute thrill it was, and make anyone who never took part wish that they had! High School Musical tells the story of an unlikely couple - Troy, the popular captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella, the brainy and beautiful member of the academic club, break all the rules of East High School society when they secretly audition for the leads in the school's musical. As they reach for the starts and follow their dreams, everyone learns about acceptance, teamwork and being yourself. And it's all set to the songs that have become major hits all over the world including Start of Something New, Get Cha Head in the Game and We're All In This Together.
This is the best show I have been to since Disney's Beauty and the Beast last January at the St James.I would definately recommend seeing this show if you are a fan of the movie. You'll definately be singing along like I was.
Wellyboinz Productions rating: ***** out of five.

I got a personal email from Richie McCaw!!!!!!!

Dear Doug,
On behalf of the 2007 Crusaders team and management, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support and enthusiasm you have provided throughout the 12th Crusade. No one is more disappointed than the players and management staff that we were unable to make the final, but we remain proud – both of the effort and commitment that everyone has shown to the cause throughout the campaign – and also of the people that we represent. The Crusaders have, and always will be, a special team. It is an honour and a privilege to wear the jersey and represent the people of the franchise. This is something we, as players, will never ever take lightly. As with all campaigns, there have been some special moments and some great memories. Even in defeat, I was proud of the way the team collectively held its head high, and humbled by the genuine nature of the Pretoria crowd’s post-match reaction to us. It reinforced, even at a time when we had not achieved the outcome we were seeking, why the Crusaders are such a great team to play for. To Jacko [Chris Jack], Johnny [Johnny Leo’o] and Azz [Aaron Mauger], thanks for the memories guys. You are all Crusaders legends, and the place won’t seem the same without you, but we wish you well in your futures beyond the Crusaders next year. Despite their departure, a lot of talented young players have been introduced to the side this year, with their being nine new Crusaders in all. This should stand us all in good stead moving forward, and make the 13th Crusade one for us all to look forward to. Thanks again for your support of me and the team.

A Boy Wizard, Homer, A Green Ogre, A Pirate Captain..and a Spider - man....Coming to a Cinema near you.......

Harry, Homer, Spidey and Captain Jack are heading to a big screen near you in an upcoming onslaught of blockbuster film releases. The new trailer for the fifth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has just been released online and will begin screening in cinemas soon, before the film's July 13 release. But Harry is just one of the stars set to heat up the box office in coming months, in what is expected to be a record year for the film industry. The June-July period is always a busy time for cinemas, as it coincides with the Northern Hemisphere's summer, but this year is expected to be even busier than usual.
The Motion Pictures Distributor's Association said this year was set to be huge with the release of several major film franchises, including the final instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean. Spider-Man 3 will be the first major box office challenger, due for worldwide release next Thursday, May 3. At an estimated US$250 million ($335 million), the film is rumoured to be the most expensive ever made, though producer Laura Ziskin refused to confirm the exact budget of the film. Given the film's two predecessors success - the first grossed US$822 million, the second US$738 million - Spider-Man 3 is expected to more than make up for its extravagant budget. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is also expected to draw record crowds when it hits cinemas in New Zealand on May 24th. It's predecessor, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, become the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time last year,
taking in $1.2 billion dollars.Only 1997's Titanic and 2003's The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King have made more.
2007 is set to be a year of sequels, with the release of Shrek the Third on June 7th, Ocean's Thirteen on June 14th, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer on June 21st , and The Bourne Ultimatum on August 10th. But perhaps the most long-awaited film to reach theatres this year is The Simpsons Movie. After years of rumour and speculation - the idea for a Simpsons feature was first floated in 1990 - the animated movie is in the proverbial can and due for release on July 26. Though the film is not expected to contend with major blockbusters like Pirates or Potter, film industry analysts anticipate it will still draw significant crowds. UPCOMING RELEASES Spider-Man 3 - May 3 Shrek the Third - June 7 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - May 24 Ocean's Thirteen - July 5 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - June 21 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - July 12 Transformers - June 28 The Simpsons Movie - July 17 Die Hard 4.0 - Live Free Or Die Hard - July 19

International Day Against Homophobia

International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) is celebrated May 17. The international day against homophobia aims to coordinate international events to call respect for lesbians and gays world-wide. Unlike the LGBT Pride Day, which is meant to emphasise proudness of one's sexuality and refusal to be ashamed of it, IDAHO is held to highlight: "... that in reality it is homophobia that is shameful and must be deconstructed in its social logic and fought against openly." May 17 was chosen as the day of the event because homosexuality was removed from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 17, 1990. In 2003 the Canadian organization Fondation Émergence instituted a similar event, the National Day Against Homophobia, on June 1. Belgium followed suit in 2005. Since 2005, IDAHO events have taken place in more than 40 countries. While there are no events held in New Zealand, our Rainbow Labour MP's send their messages of support to IDAHO organisers each year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1O56kY9-ZY

Anzac Day is remembered around New Zealand.

In Wellington, thousands packed the area in front of the Cenotaph as about 150 veterans and their families led the dawn parade the short distance along Lambton Quay. Former Secretary of Defence Graham Fortune said New Zealanders and Australians needed to remember their joint heritage built over two world wars. He said a shared standard of behaviour had been forged in the World War 1 at Gallipoli and the countries should not go so far in creating their own identities as to forget their shared history. "When we're faced with injustice, we would as a people do what was right despite any resistance," he said. "We and Australia have always worked together in war and peace. We must continue to do so." Two people were arrested in Wellington and charged with offensive behaviour and obstruction after a horn was sounded and a New Zealand flag burned, disrupting proceedings. Internationally renowned Christchurch singer Hayley Westenra sang the national anthem before a pipe band led the marchers off towards Pipitea Marae.

Significance of Anzac Day

On 25 April 1915, eight months into the First World War, Allied soldiers landed on the shores of the Gallipoli peninsula. This was Turkish territory that formed part of Germany's ally, the Ottoman Empire. The troops were there as part of a plan to open the Dardanelles Strait to the Allied fleets, allowing them to threaten the Ottoman capital Constantinople (now Istanbul) and, it was hoped, force a Turkish surrender. The Allied forces encountered unexpectedly strong resistance from the Turks, and both sides suffered enormous loss of life. The forces from New Zealand and Australia, fighting as part of the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps), played an important part in the Gallipoli campaign. At its beginning, people at home greeted with excitement the news that our soldiers were at last fully engaged in the war. New Zealand soldiers distinguished themselves with their courage and skill, establishing an enduring bond with the Australians they fought alongside. The Gallipoli campaign was, however, a costly failure for the Allies, who after nine months abandoned it and evacuated their surviving troops. Almost a third of the New Zealanders taking part had been killed; the communities they came from had counted the cost in the lengthy casualty lists that appeared in their newspapers. And the sacrifice seemed to have been in vain, for the under-resourced and poorly-conducted campaign did not have any significant influence on the outcome of the war. Although Anzac Day, the anniversary of the first day of conflict, does not mark a military triumph, it does remind us of a very important episode in New Zealand's history. Great suffering was caused to a small country by the loss of so many of its young men. But the Gallipoli campaign showcased attitudes and attributes - bravery, tenacity, practicality, ingenuity, loyalty to King and comrades - that helped New Zealand define itself as a nation, even as it fought unquestioningly on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire. After Gallipoli, New Zealand had a greater confidence in its distinct identity, and a greater pride in the international contribution it could make. And the mutual respect earned during the fighting formed the basis of the close ties with Australia that continue today.
Anzac Day is Wednesday 25th April.
*Wellington will have Hayley Westenra performing the National Anthem at the Wellington Cenotaph near Parliament.

Bring on Spidey 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am holding out for one of this years biggest blockbuster movies and I don't have that much longer to wait.
Spider-man 3 is set to explode on to the bigscreen here in New Zealand on May 3rd and will send your mind in to a major spin.
In the third film, Peter Parker is not only having to deal with his new life with Mary-Jane(MJ), but also with 3 villans who want Spidey gone....forever.
After the oppressive truth about his double life has finally emerged, Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire), is set to start a real relationship with his beloved Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), but naturally, he will also have to face the resulting consequences. J. Johan Jameson (J.K. Simmons), Parker’s relentless boss, is angered by Mary Jane’s decision to leave his son for the clumsy photographer and hires an investigative reporter named Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) to track Parker and dig up any juicy secrets.
In the meantime, Spider-Man takes interest in an escaped convict named Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church). After a dreadful mishap transforms him into a shape-shifting sand creature with superhuman strength, Marko becomes Spider-Man’s newest foe, the Sandman.

A new Gay and Lesbian Lifestyle programme starting soon on TVNZ.

Coming soon to TV2: The Outlook, TV2's new gay and lesbian series. The 10-part series is a journey through New Zealands GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual) culture through the eyes of its biggest gay publication, Express. Part observational documentary series following the challenges Express faces getting to press fortnightly, and part magazine show focussing on the news, events, individuals and stories that are inspirational, interest and affect gays and lesbians in New Zealand. The successful applicants will be offered a production credit, production expertise and equipment as well as a small fee. The finished work will be clearly marked as such within The Outlook and featured within the pages of Express.
